Unfortunately the journal referred to in Ir.
Duncan's report, descriptive of the strata passed through
by the borings and prickings, has not yet amme to hand,
we are only able to form an opinion of the material by
inspection of the samples. These, of course, represent the
material after being broken and churned up by the bering
teels and are, therefore, incomplete without the description
20companying them.

Nevertheless from an examination of the samples
taken, in conjunction with the recorded penetration of the
pricker used in taking the prickings, it appears to us that
the material below the line marked "hard as derived fre
borings", should prove satisfactory for the foundations of

of this "hard" drope to a depth too great to admit of the
foundations being carried right down therete, we consider
that a satisfactory foundation sould be obtained by means of
a rubble mound deposited in a trench dredged some few feat
below the line marked "hard se derived from prickings”.
Before preparing contrast drawings for carrying out the work
it would be advisable to take some further borings along
the sxaet lines of the works as decided upon.

As already mentioned, the tidal currente as
derived from the numerous observations taken, are of very
moderate strength and should net, in our opinion, cause any
difficulty in bringing vessels alongside the quays.

#ith regard to the soundings which are shown on Drawing • socompanying Kr. Dunoan's report, it is explain. ed that these have been reduced to Hong Kong Ordnance Datum
